인터뷰하느라 고생한 윤샘 에디터, 포토그래퍼 도윤정씨 수고하셨어요.

직접 마중 나온 그들을 따라갔다.
여름이 다가올 밤이 무색하게 새침한 바람과 동교동 어느 골목으로 들어갔다.
Hotel Cost 가 가까이 들릴 때쯤 그들과의 대화를 이어나간다.

I followed him who came to pick me up.

The wind was cold enough to cool down the warm air of summer night and we entered an alley of Dong-gyo dong. I started to carry a conversation with them when we just about to hear the Hotel Cost.

---

  바오밥의 취지를 좀 말씀해 주세요.
Would you tell me the main purpose of BAOBAB organization?

 

K : (사진기가 다가가니 말문이 막힌 듯이) 음, 아 제가 좀 울렁거려서요.
처음에. (가방 속에서 바오밥 심벌이 담긴 조금 한 스티커를 여러 장을 꺼낸다)
여기 보시면은 바오밥의 이름이 BAOBAB예요. 혈액형으로 만들어진 거고요.
(옆에서 RD가 카메라를 꺼내 사진을 찍는다.) 사실은 시작 할 때. 잠깐, 너도 같이 사진 찍으면 현기증 나.

K : Um,.. sorry I feel little throbbing. (became speechless as the camera went near.)
At first.. (he took out several stickers which the symbol of BAOBAB was printed on.)
As you can see here, the name of BAOBAB is BAOBAB. This is named by the types of blood. Wait, Actually, in the beginning,(RD took out the camera and took photo)

 

R: 아, 저는 고개를 돌리려고요.
Ah, I’m turning my face away.

K: 정말 죽겠네요(땀나는 웃음). 편하게 다시 얘기할게요. 제 친한 동생이 백혈병에 걸렸어요. 그래서 친구에게 헌혈증을 모아주다가 시작한 건데,

K: It’s killing me (smile with sweats). Let me ease myself and try again. My best friend has been diagnosed as leukemia, and we collected blood donor cards for him. That is how we started this organization.

R: 지방에서 서울까지 발로 뛰면서 모았어요. 그런데 그게 하는 도중에는 정말 귀찮잖아요. 나한테 뭘 주는 것도 아니고 귀찮았어요. 그런데 하고 보니 마음속에서 살아 있다는 느낌을 받았던 거죠. 제가 아니라 형이 말이죠.

R: We collected the cards by running on our feet from the local area to Seoul. But, you know that it would be very annoying job unless it gives me some prizes. But, after we finished it, I felt that I’m alive. Actually it was not me; it was him who felt it.

 

K: 이 친구가 말을 잘해서 제 말을 정리해 주는 편이에요.
K: He is a very good speaker. He usually arranges my speech.

 

R: 그 후 삶이라는 단체를 만들어요. 바오밥 전에 마음이 맞는 친구들이랑 티셔츠도 만들고 여러모로 활동을 했었는데 나중에 흐지부지 돼버렸죠.
R: After that happening, I made an organization which was called ‘Life’. Before BAOBAB was made, with the friends who shared same ideas, we made our own T-shirts and tried many things but later, it became nothing.

 

K: 그게 많이 좀 겹쳤어요. 사실 굉장히 하고 싶었던 차에 회사를 그만두게 되었어요. 그래서 이때다 싶어 만들었는데 운이 좋게 영국에 일러스트로 대학에 합격해서 빠르게 나가는 게 낫겠다 싶어 학원도 다니고 했었죠.
조금 그렇지만 지금은 잘 안되더라도 이건 평생의 숙제라고 생각해요. 만약에 이번에 안되더라도 다음에 또 다른 이름으로 계속 시작을 하게 될 것 같아요.

That keep lingered me. Actually, I really wanted to start it again and I became to quit my job. So, I thought that this is the time and I made an organization, but luckily I got into the university in England. At that moment, it would be the best to graduate the university and then start the organization, so I even went to an illustration academy.

 

듣고 보니 많은 사연 속에 바오밥이 만들어진 거군요.
I see that BOBAB was made through many happenings.

 

K: 사실 아까 틀에 박힌 대답을 했어요. 원래 제가 28살 전에는 봉사라는 것이 저처럼 봉사와 안 어울리는 사람이 없었을 거예요. 어렸을 때에는 봉사활동을 싫어했었거든요. 디자인이 제가 태어나 처음으로 인정받은 거라면 봉사는 처음으로 살아 있다는 것을 느낀 거였어요.

K: Actually, few minutes ago I told you the reason how I make the organization, but I was not a person who fits into volunteering. I hated volunteering when I was young. If designing is what I was given credits for and acknowledged for the first time, volunteering was what I could feel myself alive for the first time.

 

시작했던 계기가 좀 슬픈 것 같아요.
I think the purpose you started is bit sad. 

K: 아, 아니에요. 지금은 그 친구도 많이 나아졌어요. 오히려 하길 잘했다는 생각이 들어요.
K: Oh, no. Now he has been a lot better. I think it is just as well that I have done it.

 

그럼 바오밥을 시작할 때 맴버들은 어떻게 모이게 된 거죠? 북 모임도 있고 여러 가지 모임이 있던데 다른 모임들로 모이게 된 건가요?
Then, how the members of BAOBAB were gathered? There are several different gatherings like a book club. They met each other through different gatherings? 

K: 사실 지금 있는 바오밥 맴버들은 예전 삶에 있던 분들은 한 분도 없어요. 원래 삶이 좀 흐지부지된 다음에 제가 많이 성공한 다음에 이어 간다든지, 왜냐하면 봉사라는 것이 그렇잖아요. 제가 앞가림을 못하는데 하는 건 아니라고 생각해요.
K: Actually, there is no member who was in ‘Life’ because it was not a successful organization and I became successful after ‘Life’ was broke up. My opinion of volunteering is that I have to be wealthy physically or mentally to help the others.

 

바오밥에 여러 가지 모임들이 있던데 소개해주세요.
There are variety meetings of BAOBAB and, would you introduce it to me please?

 

K: 바오밥에는 세 개의 소모임이 있어요.
제일 먼저 생겼던 북 모임이 있고요. 이번 월.디.페(월드 디제이 페스티벌) 때에도 공연했었는데, 바오밥 음악단이 있고요. 파티팀이 있어요. 북 모임이 생기게 된 건 저희랑 같이 어울려 다니는 친구가 있는데 그 친구에게 좋아하는 작가의 책을 빌려 보다가 우리 이런 모임을 하나 갖는 게 어떨까 생각을 했었죠.
바오밥 같은 경우에는 책 좋아하는 친구들도 많고 동기부여라고 해야 할까요?
봉사랑 북 모임이랑 맞지는 않았지만, 후에 북 모임을 하게 되고 바오밥 이야기를 많이 했어요. 지금은 서로 지인들을 데리고 오시는 분들이 많아져서 인원수도 많아졌고요.

There are three minor meetings in BAOBAB. The first one we made is the book Club, and the next is the Music Band of BAOBAB which performed at this World D.J Festival. And the last one is the Party team. The book club was made because of our closest friends who always get along together. While I was borrowing books of my favorite author, I thought about making a book club.
 Also, there are many people who love to read books in BAOBAB, so it could be a motivation to participate. Volunteering and a book club do not match but, after we ran the meeting, we shared a lot of ideas of BAOBAB. And now, the members were increased as people invited their friends.

 

그럼 바오밥과 북 모임은 같은 모임이 아니었나요?
Then, BOBAB and Book club were not the same gathering?

 

R: 아니요. 어떻게 보면 북 모임의 연장선이에요.
바오밥은 저희 둘이서 이끌어 가고 있는데 어떻게 보면 바오밥 맴버들도 북 모임 덕분에 좋은 인연을 만들 수 있었고요. 북 모임의 이런저런 사람들이 많이 오는데 정말 조언을 얻고 싶은 분들이 많이 있거든요. 그분들에게 조금이나마 조언을 얻고자 저희가 이야기를 꺼내기도 하죠.
R: No, In a sense, BOBAB is an extension meeting of the book club. Two of us are running BAOBAB and in a different point of view, the members of BAOBAB can make good friends and connections because of the Book club.

 

그럼 맴버들은 열 명 내외로 시작하신 건가요?
So, you started the organization just with members less than ten?

 

K: 아니요 저희 둘이 시작했어요. 신기한 게 제 친구들이 저 같거든요. 그래서 사실 바오밥 이야기를 했을 때 비웃을 줄 알았어요. 안 그렇더라고요. 정말 좋다고 이야기해줬어요. 그리고 지금도 그렇지만 이 친구가(RD) 제가 못하는 부분이 있는데 상당 부분을 메워주고 있어요.
K: No, only just two of us started. The amazing part was that my friends who are just like myself in the past, understood me and told me it would be a great idea rather telling me jokes. And even today, he (RD) is filling the spots I can not manage.

 

같이 채워 나가는 식으로 서로 부족한 부분을 채워 주시네요.
You are filling the lacking spots by working together.

 

RD : 혼자 다니는 것보다 둘이 만나서 같이 행동하면 솔직히 무적이에요. 정말 안 되는 일이 없어요. 형이랑 다니며 있을 때마다 느껴요. 그저께도 느꼈어요. 제가 자주 하는 얘기가 있어요. 형이랑 얘기하다 보면 좋은 아이디어가 막 떠오른다고 하거든요. 바오밥이란 이름도 같이 상의를 했는데 갑자기 나온 거였어요.
RD : Actually, when we meet and work things out together, there is nothing we can not get through. We became absolute. I can feel it every time I work with him like yesterday. 

바오밥은 봉사단체잖아요. 그러면 후원금이나 모이는 수익은 어떻게 이뤄지나요?
BAOBAB is a volunteering organization so, how the donations and profits are formed?

 

K: 아이템과 현재 상황을 말씀 드리면요. 아이템 같은 경우는 처음에 생각했던 것이 티셔츠를 만들어 팔아 판매금액 전액을 봉사 자금으로 쓰자고 생각했어요. 그게 되었던 이유가 삶 단체를 했을 때 정말 힘들었어요. 옷은 예뻐야 하는데 원단이나 실루엣이나 신경을 써야 하는 게 너무 많잖아요. 디자인만 나오면 되는 게 아니라 저는 디자인만 할 줄 아니까 맨 처음에 공장도 다녀보고 다 해봤지만, 티셔츠 원가가 만 삼천 원 이었어요. 그런데 이 친구를 통해서 했을 때에는 원가도 내려가고 상품성 있게 되었죠.
K: For telling you about the current situation, we planed to collect money and use it as our volunteer funds by making T-shirts and selling it. The reason it worked was I had a hard time when I was running ‘Life’. The clothes have to be pretty so I had to take care of the cloth and the silhouette too. There were too many things that I had to care of but only thing I could do was designing. At first I went to the factories and the cost of T-shirt was $1.3. But when I tried again with these members of BAOBAB, the cost went down and also the T-shirts became much more valuable.

 

그럼 파티는 어떻게 이뤄지나요?
Then, how the party is organized?

 

K: 다른 하나는 자선파티예요. 이번에 5월 27일에도 파티가 있어요. 첫 번째 1회 파티 때에도 자선파티인 줄 아시고 오셨는지는 모르겠지만 워밍업 파티라고 주제를 잡았었거든요. 당시 비가 오는 날씨임에도 팔백 명이 와주셨어요. 그때 상당 수익이었죠. 돈 적인 수익이라기 보다는 큰 성과였죠. 두 번째가 이번 파티고요. 예상인원은 천명으로 잡고 있어요.
K: The second one is the party. On May 27th, there is a party too. At the 1st party, I don’t know that they knew it as a charity party, the theme of the party was ‘warming up’. And it was raining that day, but about 800 people came to the party. We earned some profits that day. We see it as a great result rather than economic profits. The second party is this party, and we estimate the guests about a thousand.

 

바오밥을 후원해 주는 곳은 따로 있는 건가요?
Is there anyone who supports BAOBAB?

 

K: 아직 지속적인 후원자는 없어요. 같이 하기로 한 업체들이 제일 먼저 큰 브랜드는 아닌데 수제 모자를 만드는 ‘랑간’이라는 형이 있어요. 아이들 머리 치수를 재서 직접 만드는 형도 있고, 파티 같은 경우 다양하게 지원을 받고,
파티랑은 별개 이야기지만 ‘그릴파이브 타코’ 라는 업체가 있는데 정부 보조 받는 어린이집이 있는데 백 명 이하를 지원해 주겠다고 해서 지원도 해주고 있어요.
K: We don’t have anyone who constantly donates and supports us yet. There is one who is giving some supports. His name is ‘Lang-gan’ and he makes hand made hats. His brand is not that well-known but sometimes he makes children’s hats for donation and measures the sizes by himself. Also, when we are planning the party, we get many supports in various ways. And there is a company which is called ‘Green Five Taco’ and a nursery house which is supported by the government grants, and they are supporting the children less than a hundred.

의외로 후원이나 지원하는 곳이 많이 있네요?
I think, there are more supporters than I expected.

 

R: 저희는 어떻게 보면 직업적으로 대중적인 사람들이 모이지는 않았어요. 도매스틱 브랜드들도 그렇고 다들 길바닥에서 있던 사람들이 이제 자리를 잡고 이런 분들께서 다들 도와주신 거죠. 저희가 이 십대들이잖아요. 그래서 좋게 봐주시고 선 듯 도와주신다는 분들이 계셔서 좀 더 수월하게 하고 있어요. 그렇다고 아직 현금 적으로 무엇을 하자 했을 때 전혀 거리낌 없이 할 수 있는 게 아니라 다들 노력하고 사비를 털어서 하고, 그런 단계에요.
아직 시행착오가 많은 단계라고 생각해요.
R: Most members of this organization have very unique jobs. Some were used to run a domestic brands or street markets but, now they are stabilized economically and helping others. We are 20s and that is why they have seen us in good way and decided to help us with out hesitation. It makes us to work much easier.

 

K: 그리고 뜻이 좋다 보니까 파티 때 참여했던 DJ분도 페이의 반은 저희에게 기부해주고 있어요. 가끔 인터뷰할 때 질문이랑 저희 대답이랑 엇나가는 부분도 있어요. 저희끼리 이야기했을 때 꼭 하자고 하는 말들이 있어서, 정리하시기 힘드실 것 같아요.
K: And because we are volunteering with a thoughtful purpose, a music DJ who is working for our party donates half of his wages. Sometimes I talk about things that are not related to the interview questions but they are the things we’ve decided to talk about during the interview no matter what. It may make you difficult to organize what I said.

 

하하하, 아니에요. 현재 바오밥 모임 맴버들을 보면 다양한 직업을 가진 분들이 모인 것 같아요. 도움이 많이 될 것 같은데 어떠세요?
Hahaha, No, that is not a problem. Now, when I look at the members of BAOBAB, they have various jobs. Does it help you a lot?

 

K: 네, 그냥 좀 음 어떻게 보면 음 뭐라고 말해야 하죠?
K: Yes, just um.. In someway.. um.. How can I say it?

 

R: 쉽게 이야기하면, 한번 상상해 보세요. 제가 말씀 드릴게요. 독거노인을 도우러 가는 사람이나 아니면 청년 봉사단체들이 봉사하러 간다고 생각해요. 그러면 머릿속에 그려지는 이미지가 있지 않나요? 다 똑같은 조끼를 입고 왠지 안경을 썼을 것 같고 꾸미는 것도 모르고 면바지에 셔츠를 입고 그런 이미지가 생각되잖아요. 저희는 약간 외모적이나 대중적인 눈으로 봤을 때 봉사와는 동 떨어진 사람들이에요.
R: Simply, Imagine what I say. When people think about the volunteers who work for elders or others, there are certain images about the volunteers, right?. The images would be like… they are wearing the same uniform and some of them are wearing glasses like they do not care about the fashion. But, in other people’s point of view, we are more likely people who are not involved in volunteering.

 

K: 외모이야기는 진지하게 하지 말자. 웃으면서 하자 (웃는 모습이 따뜻했다.)
K: Let’s not talk about the appearance seriously. Let’s do it with simile (he smiled kindly.)

 

R: 그래도 사실이니까요. (웃으면서 진지한 분위기를 자아냈다.)
그래서 저희는 타투를 하는 분도 있고, 일러스트를 하는 KOVE형도 있고, 어떻게 보면 대중적인 눈으로 봤을 때 “정말 봉사 안 하겠다” 라고 하는 사람들이 있어요.
R: But it is true. (He made a serious mood as he smiled.)
We have some members with tattoos or a member KOVE who is working as a illustrator. So in the public views, some are reflected as people who might never volunteer.

 

K: 그렇게 생긴 사람들이 모이게 된 이유가 일단 저희 지인들이 많이 있잖아요. 그래서 그 사람들이 좋다 싶으면 하는 사람들이 도움되니까, 랩을 하는 형도 있고 미용하는 친구도 있고요. 그 친구 같은 경우는 어린이집에 가면 직접 머리도 다듬어 주고 싶다고 이야기하기도 해요. 다양한 사람들이 많이 모여 있죠.
K: The reason why the people could gather together was firstly, we have many friends. If they want to do volunteer then they can be very helpful to us. We have the members who work as a hair dresser and a rapper. The member who is a hairdresser said he wants to give the haircuts to the children in a nursery.

 

R: 다들 사연이 제 각이 있어요. 음악 하시는 분들도 그렇고 의상을 전공한 사람들도 쇼를 준비하면서 옷을 만드는데 매일 고생하면서 왜 이런 걸 지금 하고 있는지 그런 생각들을 하게 되거든요. 저도 의상을 했고요. 미술 하는 사람들도 그렇고 종이도 찢고 도자기도 깨고 그러잖아요. 그런 회의감을 느끼는 사람들이 있어요. 어렸을 때에는 다들 꿈이 있었을 거고 그 꿈이 지금 내가 하고 있는 일 이잖아요. 백혈병 걸린 아이들도 분명히 노래를 부르고 싶은 아이들도 있고, 그림을 그리고 싶은 아이들, 의상 디자이너가 되고 싶은 아이들, 연예인 되고 싶은 아이들도 있을 테고 그래서 저희는 금전적으로 여유가 있으면 도움을 주겠지만, 아직 학생들도 많고 이제 사회에 발을 내 딛기 시작하는 사람들이 많아요. 그러면서 이렇게 하는 것이 어디에서 내가 도움된다는 것을 앞세우기 보다는 촉매제 역할을 하고 싶어요.
R: Each member has a story. There are musicians or designers and they are always suffering from their work. So they often think why they are doing the job. I was majored in designing. People who do the Art, they sometimes rip off their sketches or break their own sculpture to release the stress. Then they feel the disappointment to themselves. When they were young, they also had a dream and now they are doing it. And also the children in any nursery would feel the same as they did in childhood. Among the children who are suffering from leukemia, there must be someone who wants to be an artist, singer, designer or a celebrity. So if we are rich enough then we would help them financially, but we have young members or people who just started a social life. I want to be a person who can take care of everything and lead the group, but not a rash person.

 

K: 그 촉매제 역할이라는 것이 이야기하면서 꼭 들어가야 할 단어 같거든요. 왜냐하면, 저도 그랬지만, 사람들에게 봉사라는 게 따분한 것이 아니라는 걸 알리고 싶어요. 저희가 자선파티를 하잖아요. 클럽에서도 많이 하는 것도 요즘 봉사를 찾아 다니는 사람이 적잖아요. 따로 자선 모금함을 놓는 것도 아니고 사람들에게 여기서 재미있게 놀면 그게 자선 모금이 되는 거거든요. 만약에 파티 사진들이 홈페이지에 올라가고 그것에 대해 궁금증이 생겨 관심을 둬주셨으면 좋겠어요.
그리고 꼭 돈을 내야하고 무언가 지루한 것을 해야 봉사가 아니라 작은 관심과 도움을 주고 보람을 느꼈으면 좋겠어요.
K: I think I have to say about the role of a leader, because like I was before, I want to let people know volunteering is not a boring thing to do. We do charity parties in dance clubs because there are few people who are looking for volunteer. In the clubs we do not place the collecting boxes and just let people have fun and that would be a fund-raising. I wish when the pictures that people took during the party are posted on the internet websites, people get interested and show their interest about volunteering. And I want them to give little interest or help and feel volunteering is worthy to do.

 

이야기를 듣다 보니 마음이 따뜻해지네요. 이런 기분이군요. 처음 취지를 끝까지 갖고 가셨으면 좋겠어요. 앞으로 꾸준히 이어나갈 구체적인 계획이나 프로젝트 등 있으시면 말씀해 주세요.
I am impressed as I listen to the story. I hope you keep the intention of starting BAOBAB. Tell me if there are plans or projects that you are steadily planning.

 

K: 일단 계획이라기 보다는 요 초심을 지키는 것에 대해서는 RD와 정말 이야기를 많이 했어요. 삶도 그랬지만 처음에 만들 때 못을 박아 놨죠 이게 첫 번째 구요. 두 번째는 종교나 정치적인 색깔은 후원이 들어와도 절대 받지 말자. 왜냐하면 봉사단체는 한 번이라도 실수하면 끝이라고 생각해요. 딱 한 번이라도 다른 기업들은 어떤 실수가 나도 앞으로 사회에 환 헌 한다거나 어떠한 방법으로도 이미지를 회복하잖아요. 하지만 봉사단체는 끝이에요. 제가 생각하기에는 그래요.
기부하고 싶은 사람들도 많은데 어떻게 해야 할지도 모르고 자기 돈이 어떻게 쓰이는지도 모르고요. 그래서 저희는 통장사본을 스캔해서 올려놨어요. 아직 하지는 못했지만, 영수증도 다 모아서 어떻게 어디에 쓰였는지 정확히 하려고 모아놨어요.
(직접 지금까지 쓰인 영수증을 일일이 꺼내 보여주었다. 이렇게 하는 게 편할 것 같다고 했다.)
영수증도 같이 모두 올릴 거에요. 이렇게 준비하고 있어요.
K: first of all, I have talked a lot about out intend of BAOBAB with RD. As I did when I made the “Life”, I confirmed in the first time to keep the intention. This is our first confirmation and the second one is that we never accept religious and political supports no matter what because I think if a volunteering organization makes mistakes; it is the end of the organization. For example, if companies make mistakes, they can recover their images by donating money or whatever. But, in my opinion, for the organizations like us, making a mistake would be the end of it. There would be a lot of people who want to donate money but, they do not know how to donate and how the money would be spent. So, we scanned our bankbook and posted on the internet. And we have not done yet, but soon we are going to collect all the receipts and report where the money has spent.

   

두 분 바오밥의 대표이기 전에 직업을 갖고 계실 텐데 시간상으로 여유가 많지 않으실 것 같아요.
You two also have other jobs before that you are the leader of BAOBAB. I think you wouldn’t have enough spare time.

 

K: 그래서 혼자가 아닌 둘이서 하는 거죠. 혼자서는 누구도 감당을 못할 것 같아요. 자기 본업을 하면서 단체까지 신경을 쓴다는 게 어렵죠. 지금은 이 친구랑 있어서 마음이 많이 놓이는 편이에요.
K: That is why we work as two. No one could manage this work. It is hard to take care of the organization while they are having another job. But now I feel very relaxed because I have him now.

 

그럼 서로의 장점을 살려 같이 일을 하시거나 하고 싶은 생각은 없으세요?
Then, don’t you want to work together by using your proficiencies?

 

K: 일단 티셔츠가 결과물이라고도 할 수 있죠. 로고나 캠페인 성을 많이 띄고 싶어서 이야기 중이고, RD가 옷의 소재나 실루엣 등 원가도 그렇고 많이 소개해줘서 도움이 많이 됐거든요.
첫 번째 콜라보레이션이 아닌가 생각해요.
K: first, we can say the T-shirt would be the result. I want the T-shirt to be more inclined to the logos and campaign so, we are consulting about it now. And also, because RD told me a lot about the fabrics or silhouettes, it was very helpful to me. Making the t-shirt would be our first collaboration.

 

그럼 앞으로도 다양한 작업을 보여주실 수 있겠네요?
Then, from now on, you can also show us various type of work. Right?

 

K: 네, 그렇죠. 일단은 사소한 것도 같이하니까요.
K: yes that’s right. Unless we work together even it is a small thing.

 

R: 보통 티셔츠라는 눈으로 보이는 것뿐 아니라 거의 문화 쪽으로 움직인다고 보시면 돼요.
R: Actually it is not just making T-shirts but, we are doing cultural work.

 

R: 얼마 전에 있었던 월.디.패에서도 그랬고요. 북 모임도 저희 기록 중 하나이기도 해요.
형의 아이디어도 있을 거고 대중적이지는 않을 거에요. KOVE형의 추진력과 제 추진력이 합쳐져 그 성과가 올라가는 거죠.
R: Like the festival we had few months ago and also the book club is one of our records. There would be RD’s ideas which wouldn’t be common ideas. When KOVE’s and my capability of leading the group meet, our result would go up.

k: 아 그래요?
oh really?

 

R: 다른 데 가서 저희 형제라고도 한적 있어요.
Once in the past, we told somebody that we are brothers.

 

그리고 명함에 쓰여 있듯이 정말 잘 노는 사람들이 만든 가슴 따뜻한 봉사단체가 맞네요.
And also it says on the name card, BAOBAB is a very cozy organization that is made by very socializing people.

 

K: 감사합니다.

R: 그리고 저희 바오밥의 시각적인 큰 틀은 형이 잡았다고 보시면 돼요. 같이 하지 않았더라면 일러스트부터 여러 가지로 많이 돈이 들었겠죠.
R: And we can say that K made the BAOBAB’s visual. If we didn’t work together, they would be a lot of money loss of doing illustration.

 

K: 잠시만요 그전에 바오밥 하고 싶은 말이 있는데 하나만 해도 되죠?
K: Wait, before we finish, I have something to say to BAOBAB. May I?

 

그럼요.
Sure.

 

K: 저희가 하고 싶은 것은 도움이 필요한 사람 모두를 어떻게 할 순 없잖아요. 저희 생각은 그래요 일단 조금만이라도 세상이 바뀌면 진짜 멋있을 것 같다고, 그걸 우리가 할 수 있다고 생각해요. 지금도 그렇고 만들 때도 그랬고 앞으로도 계속 그 생각은 변하지 않을 것 같아요.
K: The thing we want to do is helping the people who needs us but, we can not help every single person. So our opinion is that at least if the society changes little for the poors, it would be great. And we think that we can do that. This thought have not changed and it would not change in the future too.

R: 멋있다. 탐난다.
R: nice, I like that.

마지막 문장에 넣고 싶네요. (우린 흥겨운 웃음으로 따뜻함을 공감했다.) 제가 궁금해서 사이트에 가봤거든요. 일러스트작가(KOVE)와 남성복 MD로(RD) 활동하시던데 맞나요?
I want to put that in the last sentence. (We shared the compathy by the kind smile) I wondered and I went to the website. You work as the Illustrator (KOVE) and the men’s wear designer MD. Is that right?

 

R: 네, 형 사이트 가보셨어요? 어때요?
Yes, did you have a look on the site? How was it?

 

단순한 개념으로 일러스트를 생각하고 있었어요. 사실은 제가 못하는 분야이기도 하고 컴퓨터로 표현된 텍스처 느낌을 좋아하지 않거든요. 근대 생각 외로 좋았어요. 인물들 위주의 특징을 살린 것들이나 다양하게 활동하셨더라고요.
The Illust I was thinking was very simple. Actually it is the area I am not good at and I don’t like the texture which is expressed by computers. But, it was better than I thought. You did the work in various way by picking out people’s characteristics and express it.

 

K: 아 감사합니다.
K: Ah, thank you.

R: 질문이랑 상관은 없지만 제가 군대에 있을 때 전역하고 3년 후에 내가 무엇을 하는 사람이다. 라고 이야기를 할 수 있는 것을 하고 싶다고 생각했어요. 그래서 여러 가지 써봤죠 음악도 생각했지만 잘하지 못하고 그림도 생각했지만 잘 못 그려요. 그때 글도 많이 썼고요. 결국, 지금은 결과적으로 바오밥대표를 하고 있잖아요. 그래서 정말 좋은 게 다른 데 가서도 자신 있게 누구라고 이야기할 수 있다는 게 정말 좋아요. 제 본업이 따로 있지만, MD를 하고 있다고 이야기하기보다 바오밥을 하고 있다고 먼저 이야기해요.
R: It is not related to the question, but I wanted to have a job so I can tell people that I am something right after I was discharged from the army. So I wrote several things like music and drawing but I am not good at both of them. I wrote for many times that time. But, now I’m working as a representative of BAOBAB and it makes me happy that I can say I’m a representative of an organization confidently. I have my main job but I rather want to say about BAOBAB than MD.

 

K: 저도 봉사한다고 하면 사람들이 한 번씩 더 물어봐요. 네? 네? 심지어 봉사를 공사라고 듣는 분도 계시고요. 공사 쪽 시공 그쪽 일이요.
그리고 이 친구는 패션을 전공했지 사진을 전공한 것도 아닌데 필름카메라로 여자친구랑 ‘너와 나의 시선’이라는 프로젝트를 진행하고 있어요. 보니까 느낌도 좋고 프로젝트나 책을 내고 싶다고 이야기하는데 꼭 책도 냈으면 좋겠고요. 프로젝트도 지루하게 하지 않아요. 저도 싫어 하구요 지루한 건, P.P(피크닉 프로젝트)라고 프로젝트를 해요 놀러 가는 거잖아요. 그런데 취지가 좋아요. 환경적으로 도움이 되는 건데요 일회용품을 사용하지 않는 거죠. RD의 영향을 받아 저도 그렇고 북 모임을 할 때 일회용품은 사용하지 않아요. 여러사람들이 영향을 받고 있죠.
 이런 것도 제가 아까 말씀드린 것과 같은 것 같아요. 이렇게 우리부터 시작해서 세상이 조금씩 바뀌면 멋있을 것 같다는. ”나 하나 안 쓴다고 해서 뭐 달라질 것 같아?” 가 아니라 “우리만이라도 안 쓰면 이만큼이라도 줄일 수 있는 거잖아.” 라고 생각을 하다 보면 주위 사람도 같이 할거라고 생각해요. 조금 조금씩 변해 가는 거죠.
K: It is same for me that if I say I’m a member of a volunteering organization, they ask me again like ‘pardon me?’. Even there was a person who heard volunteer as another word and misunderstood. Also he was not majored in photography but now he’s doing the project which is called “You and my view” with his girlfriend. And he said he wants to write a book about it and I strongly support his idea. He manages the project very well. It is not boring at all. I hate boring stuff too. His project is P.P (Picnic project) which is taken place outside while they are having fun and it has good purpose too. This is related to the environment and we do not use disposable product. Like I said before, it would be great that the world could change starting from us. If I think “we can reduce the trash if we don’t use” the rest people around would follow me. Changes are made little by little like that.

 

그러면 두 분은 어떻게 만나셨어요?
So, how did you meet each other?

 

R: 처음에는 ‘집 앞 카니발’이라는 곳에서 만났어요.
R: We met at the place “Carnival near your house”.

 

K: 음악 하는 사람들 사진을 찍는 걸 하고 있었는데
K: We were taking pictures of musicians.

 

R: 형이랑 진짜 인연 이예요. 심지어 동문이었는데 나중에 알게 됐어요. 그리고 같이 일했던 친구가 있는데 그 친구가 형을 소개해 주기도 했고요. 마주치기도 했어요.
R: There is a tie between him and I. We even went to the same school but, we knew it later. And also a friend of mine introduced him to me and also saw each other accidently on our way.

두 분이 이렇게 만나서 작업하시는 것도 어떻게 보면 인연이네요.
Working like this would be a tie too.

 

R: 이것도 마음이 맞아야 하죠.
R: But we can do this work unless our mind fit together.

 

K: 사실 바오밥 이전에 삶도 했었고, RD를 만나면서 생각을 하고 있었거든요. 그래서 말을 했더니 같은 생각을 하고 있었어요. 그 후 의기투합해서 같이 해보자 해서 계기가 됐죠. 저의 초대의 문제점은 혼자서도 운영하기 어려웠지만 티셔츠를 만들어 판매한다고 해도 원가가 비싼 티셔츠를 팔아서 버는 수익금도 없고요. 친구랑 이야기해서 여러 가지 문제들이 해결도 되고요.
K: Actually, before BAOBAB , I had “Life” so, I was thinking while I was with RD to work together. So, I told him and he was thinking the same thing. After that we decided to work together. My first problem was the difficulties of running the group by myself but, the other problem was that there were no profits left even though I sell the t-shirts. But the problems were solved while I had a talk with him.

서로 의견 조율이 안 돼서 다투신 적은 없으세요?
Have you ever fought because you couldn’t agree about each other’s ideas?

 

K: 바오밥 때문에 다툰 적은 없어요. 개인적으로 일이 있으면 RD가 잘 풀어주는 편이에요.
K: No, not because of BAOBAC. But for the individual conflict, RD manages well.

 

R: 다 애정이 있으니까 그렇게 하는 거죠.
R: I can do that because I love him as a friend.

 

K: 동생이지만 의지할 수 있는 동생이에요.
K: He’s younger than me but I can depend on him.

 

R: 저도 맞으니까 하는 거죠.
R: And that’s because we fit together.

 

Q: 바오밥에 참여할 기회가 따로 있나요?
Is there another opportunity that people can participate?

 

K: 자선 파티는 한 달에 한 번씩하고요. 북 모임은 6월에 있을 예정이에요.
K: We open a charity party once a month and the book club will be on June

 

K, R: 저희는 언제든지 환영입니다.

어둑한 카페에 내디뎠던 첫 걸음.
도시의 차가운 밤 공기가 맑았다.
돌아가는 발 걸음이 세상의 조그마한 변화를 느끼고 있었다.
